Journalism Vocabulary


Rim            :Outer edge of central copydesk where copyeditors work
Slop           : Excess white space near the classified ads that needs to be filled with stories.
Stringer      : News correspondent paid by story or word
Sacred cow: A subject that is always run in a favorable light
Scoop         : An exclusive story
Thirty -30-   : Traditional end mark for a news story
Slot            : Central copydesk where chief copy editor works
Spread       : Playing up an important story, usually with art
Body Type  : Small type in which most of the newspaper is set
Embargo     : Restriction placed on time date for story release
